ModMed has named Joe Harpaz chief executive, ending the co-CEO arrangement he had shared with co-founder Dan Cane since February 2024, and made Cane its first chief AI officer, the Boca Raton, Florida, maker of software for specialty medical practices said on October 28.
The ModMed CEO change comes with a wider reshuffle. Cane will set AI strategy for ModMed's products and its own operations and will take direct charge of its revenue cycle management (RCM) AI platform, which is meant to help practices fight claim denials and get paid faster. Celine Kaiser, previously chief customer officer, becomes chief operating officer. Co-founder Dr. Michael Sherling remains chief medical and strategy officer and leads clinical AI. Both co-founders stay on ModMed's board.
The new structure, as ModMed described it:
Executive | Role | Responsible for |
|---|---|---|
Joe Harpaz | CEO | Runs the company |
Dan Cane | Chief AI officer | AI strategy; the RCM AI platform; internal AI work |
Celine Kaiser | Chief operating officer | Product management, customer success, the RCM business |
Dr. Michael Sherling | Chief medical and strategy officer | Clinical AI, including ModMed Scribe |

Harpaz's record
Harpaz joined ModMed in 2018 as president and chief operating officer and became co-CEO on February 13, 2024, ModMed said at the time. Before ModMed he was managing director of the corporate market business at Thomson Reuters (Nasdaq: TRI), a unit ModMed said had nearly $600 million in global revenue, and earlier he founded Immediatech and the GoFileRoom cloud workflow product.

Why now
Investment firm Clearlake Capital Group completed its investment in ModMed in April 2025, without disclosing terms. ModMed said then that more than 40,000 providers used its software; it now puts the number at nearly 50,000.
In April 2026 ModMed acquired Bonsai Health, whose software contacts patients who are overdue for care and fills open appointments without staff involvement. Bonsai's co-founders, Luke Kervin and Travis Schneider, will lead a new front-office AI platform that ModMed plans to roll out in 2027. ModMed also said its AI note-taking product, ModMed Scribe, has been used in nearly 3 million patient visits in its first 11 months on the market.
"We have strong conviction in Joe's proven leadership to scale the organization as CEO," said Paul Huber, a partner and managing director at Clearlake.
What changes for customers
ModMed organized the new structure around three areas of AI work: revenue cycle management, clinical care, and patient engagement. Kaiser now oversees product management, customer success, and the RCM business, a combination the company said is meant to give practices a more coordinated experience.
